Melo as a rental......and other trade deadline stuff

The Mavs are rumored to be potential trade deadline wheelers and dealers every year and this year is no different.  With the Feb 24 trade deadline fast approaching, its appropriate we visit the topic and how it relates to our boys.  Let's take a look at a few of the guys rumored to be for sale and whether they are worth giving up Roddy B, picks, Caron's expiring or all (or none) of the above.

Melo (w/ extension):
Legit superstar that when paired with Dirk makes the Mavs legit championship contenders, possibly even favorites.  It also creates a new "window" extending beyond the eventual deminishing Dirk with Melo as the centerpiece.  He's averaging.....you know what, if you need me to explain why we'd have to do this, just ring your call button and Tommy will come back there and hit you over the head with a tack hammer.
Conclusion:  Trade the farm

Melo-as-a-rental (no extension):
This is the more plausable scenario and I'm in, now give me a second to explain why.

I like Caron and Roddy, but I'd like a ring for Dirk a lot more, and for a championship and redemption over the Heat I think I might give up my first born child (and btw my first born was a boy, so that offer shouldn't be taken lightly).  I could honestly see the Mavs winning the west with the current squad.  The Spurs dont scare me and Kobe seems on the doorstep of being done.  Unfortunately, I still dont see us winning a grind-it-out series against the Celts or Heat bc the playoffs turn into murderball and those teams are full of guys with more uh, street cred, than what we got.  Ahh, that thought of getting to to the ship just to lose again made me throw-up in my mouth just a little.  Melo could change all that.  Bottom line is if he doesn't sign an extension, he's heading to NY this summer and it wont be long before his girlfriend Chris Paul joins him to form another super-team.  That's just the trend in the NBA nowadays and like the guys in Miami, I think Melo and CP3 have had this thing planned for a while.  We know our window with Dirk is fading bc of his age and while we could theoretically contend in the west for years to come, the creation of another super-team could mean our window for a title is THIS YEAR.  We have to be the super-team and our only real shot at it is now.  Melo makes us that.  Roddy doesnt.  Do the deal.  Win the ship.  Party time.  Excellent.

The Other Guys....

Stephen Jackson:
I gotta say this intrigues me.  I've seen about enough of Peja.  He's experienced and he can still shoot, but the dudes old, cant get to the cup and cant guard anybody.  SJax is a versatile player that can play multiple positions but he's also all sorts of crazy and if we're doing a deal for him I'd like to send out Stevenson to fulfill my only one lunatic allowed on the team rule.  For me it comes down to management's plans for Caron.  I like him better than SJax, but if he's not in the team's long term plans, I'm down for doing this deal.

Tashaun Prince:
Good defender, handles the ball well for a taller guy, scores 15ish a game and is actually a better shooter than he looks.  Oh and he's won a title before.  Problem is, like Butler his contract expires at the end of the season, meaning Detroit will want more in return than just Caron for it to make sense for them.  Assuming that's the case, I'm out.

Troy Murphy:
Word on the street is he'll get bought out before the deadline by NJ and teams like Boston, Miami, Orlando and us will be looking to add him for the rest of the season on the cheap.  I've never really liked the guy and I'm not sure how much burn he'd actually get here, but all he'd cost us is a little $ and Cardinal's roster spot.  I'm down.

The moral of this story is we shouldnt be afraid of giving up Roddy B, Caron, picks, cash, or other ancillary players in order to land Melo, even if its just a rental.  The west is there for the taking and Miami and NY are only getting better in the years to come.  The time to win is now and if that happens, who knows.....maybe Dirk and Cubes could pull off another miracle and convince Melo to stay.
