Mavs Window (January 20, 2011)

I’m not giving up on the Mavs yet, but I’ve got a bit of a wandering eye.  I figure we’ve got about 2 to 3 years left of high level Dirk, and we all got to see firsthand what life without him will be like.  I think the Butler injury could be a blessing in disguise because we were setting up to be another regular season juggernaut without the pieces to be a real title contender and now we’re forced to make a move to save this year’s chances.  The only problem is the only two names I hear associated with us that seem decent are Tashaun Prince and Steven Jackson.  I guess I’d be for Prince.  But, just in case this Mavs thing starts to fizzle I’ve found something to capture my attention… Blake Griffin
I almost wrote this email two days ago when he had a double-double against the Lake-show including two sick dunks, and then he went out and scored 47 pts the next night.  Not only is dude a non-stop highlight reel he also has his every feat chronicled by the most entertaining sports writer going, Bill Simmons.  There are probably only 2 to 3 years of continual excessive dunks before he NBA styles his game and starts being an amazing 15-ft jump shooter, so we need to make sure we catch what we can while this dude is young.  Just think if we hadn’t taken Kobe’s high flying for granted when he was young, how fun it would have been to pretend like we were Laker fans.
In conclusion, Mavs are #1, but I believe there’s room in all of our hearts for some Clippers love if things get re-dirkless.

I wonder if we could trade JET straight up for Blake Griffin….

The clippers would be very clipper like if they entertained any offer to trade him ever... even if the guy gets his legs cut out by the backboard and falls on his head (not out of the question) they should keep him.  He is the only chance that franchise has to turn.  With that being said, the mavs absolutely suck without dirk and when you've got a 7 footer that does what he does, then the whole team can get away with playing like softies (wanted to use another word there but didn't) and its ok.  When he's not on the court and we've got a bunch of average dudes its miserable.
I'm game for falling in love with the Clips just because Baron Davis (though I hate him as a warrior) is hilarious to watch and Eric Gordon is actually pretty good.
How to fix the mavs... as much as I hate it I say we blow it up and go the Timberwolves way and just get a lot of young talent and try to build something new.  All these guys are getting tooooo old! What are we gonna do in 3 years when Dirks lower body just falls apart, Kidd is old and will kill it in Grapevine Rec but like seriously, no one on this team will be good in 5 years (see Bryan Cardinal). Just make ridiculous gambles now and maybe one will pay off.  Too bad we have a celeb PG cuz I think even if they were still mediocre it woulda been great to bring in Nash and let him and Dirk have a farewell party together.  It just woulda been fun to watch again...
That was just straight up rambling nonsense.  I apologize.
Greg Gonzalez

I think we’re gonna get melo
Nathan Chandler

I think they’ll still send him to NJ or NY
Sounds more likely will end up with Peja
Hunter

If the nets truly have called off talks, we have a decent shot. The Nugs
have to get something for him and we have some talent and some cap assets
that could make it happen.
Even if melo leaves us after this year, we'd have a good shot at the ship
this year and then do a sign and trade with him to the Knicks to get some
value back.
